Delivering Nature Positive outcomes through landscape action in the mining sector
As the mining sector increasingly seeks to align with global goals to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, companies are investigating ways to act beyond site-level mitigation and contribute towards nature goals at the landscape scale. Yet what actually constitutes credible landscape action and the extent to which mining companies are expected to contribute has remained under-specified, leaving companies without a clear basis for action or accountability.
Working in partnership with the Nature Positive Landscape Initiative, The Biodiversity Consultancy (TBC) has been working to help close this gap and provide the sector with clarity on what credible landscape-scale action can look like in practice.
Our approach
- Synthesised the evidence base: Drew together insights from planetary boundaries, landscape conservation, biodiversity target-setting and corporate accountability literature.
- Combined this with applied experience: Integrated our own experience advising the mining sector on biodiversity risk and strategy to ensure the framework was practical, not just theoretical.
- Defined what counts as landscape action: Set out what constitutes genuine landscape conservation action — and, critically, what does not.
- Aligned boundaries with global goals: Clarified how landscape boundaries and targets can align with global biodiversity goals such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
- Clarified shared responsibility: Defined how responsibility and delivery roles for landscape outcomes can be shared credibly across companies, partners and other actors.
- Convened sector and scientific expertise: Worked with leading mining companies and biodiversity experts to ground the framework in both scientific rigour and operational reality.
Outcomes
TBC delivered clear guidance and thought leadership on defining credible landscape conservation action for the mining sector beyond site-level mitigation. gives mining companies a practical basis for contributing meaningfully to landscape-level biodiversity recovery as part of their Nature Positive commitments.
The framework was presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2025, and is currently progressing toward peer-reviewed publication. A pre-print is available: Delivering Nature Positive outcomes through landscape conservation: credible actions and shared responsibility in the mining sector.
By giving the Nature Positive Landscape Initiative a shared definition of credible landscape action, this work helps mining companies move from ambition to accountable, measurable contributions to nature recovery.
