Over the winter, TBC and TotalEnergies ran a public consultation on the Biodiversity Footprint Indicator for Sites (BFIS), as the continuation of this project. This was an important step in validating the BFIS framework, and we are grateful to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts.
Feedback was consistently positive. Respondents highlighted BFIS as a pragmatic, science-based and transparent approach that helps businesses tackle biodiversity reporting and management challenges across large site portfolios. They particularly valued its clear structure, use of reputable datasets, practical guidance, and alignment with emerging frameworks such as CSRD and TNFD.
The consultation also identified opportunities to strengthen the Methodology Report and White Paper. Key updates include:
- A clearer explanation of how BFIS complements, rather than replaces, site-level assessment;
- Improved articulation of intended users and decision-making applications;
- A stronger explanation of how Step 1 outputs (Evaluate & Prioritise) translate into action, monitoring and reporting through Step 2 (Corporate Reporting Framework);
- More explicit detail on Step 1 limitations, including its current focus on land-use impacts;
- An expanded description of alignment with TNFD LEAP and ESRS E4 requirements; and
- Clearer pathways for future development.

The key takeaway from the consultation is that BFIS is viewed as a credible and useful framework for biodiversity impact assessment, prioritisation, management and reporting — "taking existing methodologies to the next level" while "bringing them together into a clear and modular structure."
BFIS is now being tested internally by TotalEnergies, and the team is preparing a scientific publication on the framework.
