Powering a Nature Positive transition to green energy

5 July 2023

Mihai Coroi, former Technical Director – Biodiversity & Ecology at Mott MacDonald – has joined The Biodiversity Consultancy as Technical Director in our Renewables Team.

Mihai led the international biodiversity team at Mott MacDonald and has more than 25 years’ experience in biodiversity and ecology projects in over 40 countries. He helped to develop the Environmental and Social Safeguards for the Green Climate Fund, has acted as a biodiversity adviser for many renewable energy projects, and has trained corporates on how to implement biodiversity standards and guidelines over the project lifecycle.

Of Mihai’s appointment, The Biodiversity Consultancy’s Chief Executive Helen Temple said:

“As revealed in a recent publication written by The Biodiversity Consultancy and WWF, rapid scaling up of renewable energy will play a key role in tackling climate change. However, there’s a risk that this shift has unintended consequences for nature. We can and must protect nature as we move away from fossil fuels.

Mihai will be pivotal in supporting lenders and the renewables sector to deliver the transition not just without negative impacts on biodiversity, but with an aim to restore nature. He will help our energy clients develop effective strategies that enable them to play their part in a Nature Positive future.”

Mihai brings world-class technical skills in biodiversity assessments, due diligence, and specialist biodiversity studies in the renewable energy and other sectors. He is an expert in plant ecology, habitats and invasive species. He has published more than 30 scientific papers and two books.

On joining The Biodiversity Consultancy Mihai said:

“Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about biodiversity. We must tackle global problems such as biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, climate change and poverty in order to build a more sustainable future. I’m delighted to join The Biodiversity Consultancy and looking forward to helping clients in the energy sector mainstream biodiversity into their decision making”.
