NGRL, Akyem mine, Ghana: Development of a biodiversity offset to achieve NNL

TBC is supporting Newmont Golden Ridge Limited (NGRL), a subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation, to develop and implement a Biodiversity Strategy that is aligned with best international practice including IFC PS6. The Biodiversity Strategy is being implemented in Ghana as a commitment related to the development of the Akyem Mine and aims to achieve no net loss (NNL) of biodiversity and net gain for areas that qualify as Critical Habitat.

The Akyem Mine is in the Birim North District of the Eastern region of Ghana, West Africa, 180km North West of the national capital Accra. The Mine operations consist of an open pit gold mine and associated facilities and NGRL is applying the mitigation hierarchy to avoid, minimize and restore the direct and indirect impacts on-site and offset any residual impacts; the development of a like-for-like offset is an integral part of achieving no net loss (NNL) for the project.

Currently TBC is supporting NGRL to quantify the residual impacts of the Akyem mine, to identify and assess a suitable offset site and to develop a Biodiversity Offset Strategy and a Biodiversity Offset Management Plan.
