Supporting Ferrero in taking concrete action on nature

Organisation’s ambitions

Ferrero, one of the world’s top three confectionery companies and home to iconic brands such as Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, and Raffaello, is taking steps to understand and reduce its impact on nature, particularly those linked to hazelnut farming in ecologically sensitive regions.

Over the past two years, TBC has partnered with Ferrero to move from high-level ambition to site- and commodity-specific action.

Our approach

  • Quantified impacts: Delivered a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to profile nature impacts across operations and supply chains.
  • Located what matters most: Ran a Location-based Risk Assessment to  identify nature-related risks and values for selected operations and commodities, including priority landscapes for biodiversity and water stress and pollution
  • Screened risk at scale: Completed biodiversity risk screening for cocoa, hazelnut, and palm oil.
  • Built shared ownership: Facilitated two cross-functional stakeholder workshops to test findings and co-design interventions.
  • Operationalised strategy: Co-created a practical Nature Framework, linking corporate ambition to measurable actions

Outcomes

Ferrero has moved from commitment to concrete action on nature. Our work is catalysing investments in Deforestation/Conversion Free (DCF) monitoring, site-level biodiversity management and landscape conservation, enabling development of biodiversity management plans that integrate restoration and conservation priorities across sites. We also established clear DCF risk profiles for hazelnut growing regions, providing a stronger evidence base for supplier engagement for improved outcomes.

These efforts embed nature into Ferrero’s corporate decision making and position the company to align its future growth with measurable nature positive outcomes.

This work helps to reduce pressures on nature. By embedding biodiversity into sourcing and site management, Ferrero can confidently protect ecosystems, support habitat restoration, and contribute to global efforts to halt and reverse nature loss.

The Biodiversity Consultancy is good at striking the right balance and is very pragmatic from a business perspective. Their analysis has provided an overview of our most material impacts on nature and informed our priorities for regenerative agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and water stewardship -
