The Biodiversity Consultancy presents at SBTN’s corporate engagement program
On September 4, 2024, Dr Hollie Booth, Strategic Director of Nature Strategies at The Biodiversity Consultancy, shared her insights on securing buy-in from senior leadership and driving organisational change towards adoption of Science-Based Targets, during the Science Based Targets Network's (SBTN) Corporate Engagement Program's webinar.
Establishing Science-Based Targets (SBTs) enhances the credibility of corporate environmental strategies and contributed towards global goals of halting and reversing biodiversity loss. However, integrating new commitments and practices that mitigate biodiversity impacts within organisations can also be challenging, particularly regarding securing buy-in from the board, c-suite and operational teams amid competing priorities. Many businesses still perceive addressing nature-related risks as an opportunity to build long-term business resilience and shareholder value.
During her presentation, Hollie emphasised the importance of understanding board and senior management’s priorities to make the case for SBTs and embedding SBTs within a data-driven and participatory approach to change management.
She highlighted how available methods for biodiversity footprinting can also be leveraged to explore the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of different targets and levels of ambition. Such assessments can be used to balance scientific rigour with operational practicalities, and ultimately demonstrate nature’s return-on-investment and allow companies to set targets which are ambitious but achievable. Simplifying complex environmental data into actionable insights gives decision-makers the confidence to support the adoption of Science-Based Targets.
“While biodiversity itself is very complex, the actions needed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss are quite simple,” said Hollie.
“Breaking it down into logical bite-sized helps to cut through the perceived complexity and focus on action.”
The corporate engagement program and The Biodiversity Consultancy’s role
SBTN's Corporate Engagement Program (CEP) is a collaborative platform that invites companies, consultants, industry coalitions, and financial institutions to collaborate with SBTN in developing cost-effective and user-friendly approaches to set and achieve science-based targets for nature. Participants have exclusive opportunities to test and provide feedback on the emerging methods and tools.
As a key member of SBTN's Corporate Engagement Program (CEP), The Biodiversity Consultancy has been instrumental in supporting SBTN’s mission by supporting the development of methodologies, tools, and guidance. These resources enable businesses to quantify their contributions towards global sustainability goals, strengthen environmental commitments, and navigate the complex transition to a nature positive future.
