Navigating uncertainties in biodiversity datasets for the mining and minerals sector

15 July 2025

Data is key to effective business decision making on nature, and today, hundreds of global biodiversity metrics and datasets exist. However, new research led by The Biodiversity Consultancy highlights important limitations in how these datasets are used to assess nature-related risks and opportunities, particularly for the mining and minerals sector. Most available biodiversity data is not designed with mining in mind, creating challenges for the sector itself and for others with minerals in their supply chains — including the automotive, renewables, food, and beverage industries.

Our analysis shows that over half of the global land area already disturbed by mining is still classified as having a ‘natural’ land cover, covered in vegetation that is unlikely there. This suggests that biodiversity metrics based on these global maps may overestimate ecosystem integritythe current state of nature and underestimate opportunities for restoration or conservation efforts to improve it. These distortions vary by region — for example, 46% of mining land is classified as natural in Europe, compared to 69% in Australia — biasing decisions about where nature positive investments could be most effective.

While all biodiversity datasets have limitations, especially those developed for global applications, they remain valuable tools if used appropriately. It is essential that these uncertainties are understood and factored into environmental decision making.

Our paper outlines how businesses can address these issues — including recommendations on when and how to supplement global metrics with high-resolution, site-specific biodiversity data to support more accurate, context-driven strategies. Read our full insights here.

University of Queensland

The Biodiversity Consultancy partners with UQ’s Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science on business contributions to conservation science. The Centre conducts leading solutions-oriented research for biodiversity conservation, ranging from site-based research on biodiversity and habitat restoration to global studies of biodiversity risks to shape policy and industry practices.

Through this collaboration, we conduct research on topics including responsible mining, biodiversity offsetting and ecological compensation, equitable implementation of no net loss and net gain under environmental and socioeconomic dimensions, and business impacts and dependencies on nature. We also host research placements, providing students with hands-on experience in applying their research to the business world.
