Daniel Pires

Principal Consultant

Daniel is an ecologist with over 22 years of experience specializing in freshwater ecology. His academic background includes a Master’s and PhD in stream fish ecology, with research covering key ecological topics such as fish spawning, migration and distribution patterns.

With over 15 years of experience as a consultant, Daniel has worked extensively on hydropower projects, as well as in the mining, quarrying, oil & gas, infrastructure, and wind energy sectors. His expertise covers all phases of environmental impact assessment, including residual impact assessments, designing and implementing offset measures, developing biodiversity action plans, and conducting follow-up monitoring, while ensuring alignment with international environmental standards such as IFC PS6.

In projects involving surface water ecology, he has developed freshwater community and water ecological quality assessments, hydro-morphological characterizations, critical habitat assessments, environmental flow assessments and monitoring, species translocations, barrier removal prioritization, and both short- and long-term monitoring programs."

With an interest in data analysis, he has developed various resources for ecological data processing and statistical analysis, recently incorporating machine learning models to enhance data processing efficiency.

Daniel has also contributed to conservation efforts as a co-author of the Portuguese Red List books for freshwater fish and invertebrates of mainland Portugal.
