Johny Rabenantoandro

Johny is a hands-on biodiversity expert dedicated to the extractives sector. He has more than 15 years’ experience of leadership roles within the HSE teams of extractives multinationals and specialises in biodiversity management design, implementation and operational support.

Johny is passionate about biodiversity management in the mining sector. He has a unique understanding of the real-world challenges and opportunities of bringing sustainability into the extractive sector and knows that success on the ground is only possible with properly training teams and management support.

Before TBC, Johny was the Biodiversity Team Leader for Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) in Guinea, where he designed and implemented the PS6-aligned biodiversity program of CBG’s expansion project. Prior to that he enjoyed 15 years with QMM SA (Rio Tinto subsidiary), a heavy sand minerals mining operation in Madagascar, where he held the position of Biodiversity and Sustainability Manager. Johny was responsible for QMM’s 120-strong environment team, with duties stretching from budget management to capacity building to stakeholder liaison. His familiarity with mining company Health, Safety and Environment Management systems is second to none. Last but not least, he has more than 20 years’ experience in applied mining site rehabilitation.

His career started with a formative posting as a field botanist for the Missouri Botanical Garden Program in Madagascar. Johny also has a Master’s degree in Botany. Johny has co-authored more than 20 academic papers and has described several new-to-science species of Madagascar’s endemic flora.

Johny speaks fluent French, Malagasy and English.
