Harmonising the Nature Framework Landscape for Mining and Minerals

18/02/2025 - 18/02/2025

Webinar

Mining and the minerals value chain have been adapting to the rapid evolution of nature-related frameworks recently – whether voluntary, like TNFD, or regulatory, such as CSRD – each serves a distinct purpose. Governments, investors, and societies increasingly expect mining companies to integrate nature protection and restoration into their business strategies. Navigating these frameworks by business can be a challenge to meet their reporting and regulatory needs.

Nature-related frameworks have been developed to meet these growing expectations, each employing different mechanisms to drive action. Multiple initiatives in the mining and minerals sector such as The Copper Mark, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative and the World Gold Council require further consideration by business. It can be challenging to determine which frameworks are most appropriate to adopt within different contexts and for individual assets.

Recognising the challenges that the mining and metals sector has, several initiatives have launched a process to harmonise nature frameworks for the future through the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI). In late 2024, CMSI held a public consultation on the draft standard to give businesses and other stakeholders an opportunity to comment. The Biodiversity Consultancy has leveraged its global experience with some of the largest mining companies to input into this initiative to help miners understand their value chains and navigate nature frameworks, we recognise this opportunity to streamline the adoption of nature frameworks by businesses once finalised.

Aligning with nature frameworks can help mining companies enhance biodiversity, strengthen community relationships, mitigate material risks, and boost investor confidence. This webinar will explore how mining companies can effectively navigate nature-related frameworks such as TNFD and CSRD and leverage their potential as a strategic advantage.
